What Are Dermal Fillers?

As our faces age we lose volume and that full–faced, youthful look gradually disappears. The effects of gravity can cause skin to sag; cheeks to lose definition and hollows can develop in the tear trough area under our eyes, creating that ‘tired all the time’ look. Both collagen and hyaluronic acid are natural proteins present within our body tissues. They contribute to the texture, volume and elasticity of our skin by attracting and retaining water. Replacement of these proteins under the surface of the skin can result in a healthy and vital skin appearance, smooth out wrinkles, old wounds and acne scars or even enhance the definition of the lip shape.

Injectable hyaluronic acid Dermal Fillers are one of the most popular facial rejuvenation treatments that we offer and are a highly effective anti-ageing treatment with instant results and virtually no down-time.

We use these fillers to enhance the cheeks, the tear trough area below the eye and the folds and lines between the nose and mouth and to naturally enhance the lips. Our dentists are well known for their aesthetic eye and expertise with injectables, preferring a natural looking result that is flattering rather than an obvious and overfilled look.

Dermal Fillers and the results

The Juvederm range of Dermal Fillers are specially formulated for skin revitalisation that work by improving skin elasticity and skin tone and adding hydration. Skin is instantly revitalised with a visible improvement in texture and tone. Dry, crepey, sun damaged skin instantly looks hydrated and suppler.

The Juvederm range of fillers is hyaluronic acid based and we can use them to treat all depressions, folds, wrinkles and fine lines. No patch test is required and the result will last up to a year.

A local anaesthetic helps in sensitive areas around the mouth and then small amounts of filler are injected to produce the desired effect. The effect can be seen immediately. After treatment, the area may be a little pink or puffy for a few hours but this is easily concealed with a light foundation.

Lip Enhancement

Dermal Fillers are also used to enhance the lips and create a fuller, but natural looking, lip line. As we age, the lips become thinner and smaller; developing those fine vertical lines around the edges that are a real giveaway sign of ageing. Full, plump lips are very youthful looking whereas thin lips can be very ageing and give the face a rather miserable look. We use hyaluronic acid fillers that are specifically designed to restore natural fullness and create beautifully shaped lips.

We have all seen the results when too much filler has been used to plump the lips, so our aim is to produce a beautiful, subtle enhancement.

This treatment is a highly effective way to improve the appearance and restore symmetry without undergoing invasive surgery. The treatment involves using a combination of BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers to shape and contour the cheeks.

The non-surgical nose job offers a real alternative to traditional rhinoplasty with little or no pain and results that can be seen immediately, as a small amount of filler can give instant definition to the nose.

Cinderella Lips

If you are toying with the idea of lip fillers and want to see what you would look like with a fuller pout, try the Cinderella Lips treatment which is an injection of saline into the lip line, which disappears… Cinderella-style after just 24-48 hours. This is a great quick-fix treatment for a special night out.

How many treatments will you need?

The effects vary from individual to individual and will last between three-twelve months and then a repeat treatment will be necessary.

The results?

Natural looking, subtle results – extra volume is added to the main body of the lip, the vermillion border of the lips is more defined and fine lines are diminished. Lips appear naturally youthful and plump giving a flattering and more attractive look without the risk of ‘trout pout’.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some frequently asked questions – please ask if you have any other questions.

Is Juvederm safe?

Yes. Juvederm has been used extensively for many years. Juvederm has a highly favourable safety profile. It is composed of non-animal derived stabilised hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body. Juvederm is fully biocompatible.

There is no risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. No allergy testing is required before use. After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling has disappeared. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you should not use Juvederm dermal fillers.

Can I have Juvederm dermal filler treatment?

Juvederm should not be considered if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of severe allergic reactions
  • Have severe bleeding disorders, because you could bruise excessively

After the treatment you should minimize exposure of the treated area to excessive sun and UV lamp exposure and extreme cold weather until any initial swelling and redness has resolved. If laser treatment, chemical peeling or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with Juvederm there is a possible risk of eliciting an inflammatory reaction at the implant site. This also applies if Juvederm is administered before the skin has healed completely after such a procedure.

How long does Juvederm last?

Typically, Juvederm treatments last 6 to 9 months but results can vary from person to person.

What should you do prior to treatment?

No patch testing is required for Juvederm. You should stop aspirins or other NSAIDS, St John’s Wort and vitamin E supplements 1 week prior to treatment to avoid increased bruising. If you have previously suffered from cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence especially with lip enhancement procedures.
